Even if the brain itself does not have nerves to feel pain, other areas of the skull such as the scalp, face, mouth and throat have pain-sensitive nerve fibers, which can ache. Headache - or cephalgia - commonly refers to any kind of pain that would appear in one or several of these sensitive areas of the skull.

Headaches can be classified into two types:

Primary headaches, to which stress headache, cluster headache and migraine headache belong and which are not due to any disorder; And Secondary headaches which are due to a disorder. Headaches are the most frequent nervous affection. Everybody will be affected by headache at least once in their lifetime, but for 55 million Americans, it is a recurring experience. The World Health Organization claims that one in every 20 adult suffers from recurrent headaches, with women being more at risk than males.

Headaches can be greatly handicapping and might very negatively affect the people who suffer from them. Work ability is lessened for those people, which may also negatively affect their economic situation. Social skills are also limited as the suffering, or the fear thereof, sometimes makes people more ill-humored. Some people with migraine even have to consistently pay attention to the things they eat, the things they see, and last but not least the things they smell, because certain strong or unpleasant sensations may trigger pain.

Because headaches are seen as such a banal, minor condition, the individuals who experience them on a constant basis also have to face the incomprehension of their friends and relatives. This social barrier may also hold people back from trying to get medical attention and looking for a proper treatment. But before being treated, your headache needs to be "identified".

We have seen before that there were two major sorts of headache: Primary and Secondary, each subdivided into many other subtypes. Their symptoms may change as well as what causes them and, naturally, how they should be treated. This is why they need to be identified by a doctor in order to receive proper treatment.

Stress headache, also referred to as tension headache, is the most usual kind of primary headache and accounts for nearly 90 percent of all headaches. It is usually considered related to stress or related to muscular and skeletal problems in the neck.

Tension headache is usually episodic and may last from several minutes to several hours, but might last for several days in the most severe cases. It is typically described as a strong steady pressure, usually on both sides of the head, or spreading around it, on occasion also affecting the neck.

Migraine is somewhat different and is reckoned to most certainly have a genetic origin. Migraines occur when the brain releases painful substances, that spread to the nerves and vessels of the head. Migraine generally happens on a monthly basis and lasts for a few hours, with corollary symptoms such as nausea and intolerance of regular levels of light and sound.

Cluster headaches generally occur frequently and are short lasting. They are also extremely painful. They occur in clusters of six to twelve weeks and every 1 or 2 years, generally at the same period of the year. The pain is extraordinarily raw and affects the whole head, typically beginning with the eye, and then affecting the forehead, nose and mouth. It is much less common than other types of headache and usually affects men.

Headaches are usually cured with over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen or paracetamol. A physician could also prescribe avoiding some common causes of headaches such as noise or some sorts of foods. Caffeine, Magnesium and Vitamin B2 have also been regarded as effective in the treatment of migraine.

Drugs are however not cheap and sometimes have undesired side effects, especially for people who must use them on a daily basis. This is why you may want to think about another way of avoiding the various types of headache. Hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) were indeed shown to be effective and can help you to dissipate pain anywhere in your body, including your head, as well as trying to be more relaxed at the same time.

Stress is a very common cause of headache, and specific hypnotic techniques have been developed to dissipate both stress and headaches quickly.

People who suffer from migraine or cluster headache can usually feel the first symptoms before it really occurs, and could learn self-hypnosis techniques to abort them before they become too painful.

Hypnotherapists who understand how handicapping a headache can be have created these therapeutic techniques. Hypnotherapy is a drug free modality that will help you to find the relief you have been looking for. Headache is a grave condition with many variations, concerning millions of people worldwide.
